Feet are very important structures that support the weight of the body and transmit forces through the ankle, knee, hip, and spine. Our feet are usually under a constant amount of stress as we go about our daily tasks, so it isn't surprising that injuries can sometimes occur.
Anyone who has suffered or is suffering from plantar fasciitis knows exactly how agonizing it can be. The constant throbbing, the stabbing pain, the inability to walk without hobbling. Any or all of these symptoms can significantly negatively impact your daily life. So what exactly is plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the bottom of the foot resulting from excessive stretching of the thick band of connective tissue known as the plantar fascia. Typically, pain is worse in the mornings and felt near of the heel where the fascia is most inflamed. However, the fascia or musculature can be irritated elsewhere and pain can be felt anywhere along the bottom of the foot.
Plantar fasciitis can result from a variety of reasons including overuse (e.g. excessive running or standing,) wearing improper footwear or footwear with inadequate support (e.g. flipflops,) joint dysfunction in the foot, or weight gain. While plantar fasciitis can be extremely chronic, painful, and debilitating, it is treatable!
How We Can Help
Myofascial release can address most soft tissue components of plantar fasciitis by releasing tight muscles, breaking up fibrosis (scar tissue) within the plantar fascia, and helping free any entrapped nerves. Soft tissue therapy and chiropractic adjusting powerfully complement each other by addressing both the joint and muscular components which are responsible for causing many common foot and ankle ailments.
